Renoir BiographyThe artist painted hangings for overseas missionaries and decorations on fans before he enrolled in art school. During those early years, Renoir often visited the Louvre to study the French famous painters. In 1860s, he did not have enough money to buy oil paints. In 1862, Pierre August Renoir met Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Frédéric Bazille. In the late 1860s, Renoir and Monet discovered diffuse reflection through the practice of painting light and water. Several pairs of paintings after that exist in which Monet and Renoir depicted the same scenes such as La Grenouillère in 1869. He experienced his initial acclaim when six paintings of Renoir were hung in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. One of the best known Impressionist paintings is Renoir Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette, French title is Bal du moulin de la Galette. The artwork depicts an open-air scene, crowded with people, at a popular dance garden on the Butte Montmartre, close to where the painter lived. In 1881, Pierre-Auguste Renoir traveled to Algeria where he associated with Eugène Delacroix, later go to Madrid to see the work of Diego Velázquez, to Italy to see Titian's masterpieces in Florence and the paintings of Raphael in Rome. In 1882 Pierre Renoir convalesced for six weeks in Algeria after contracting pneumonia. In 1883, the painter spent the summer in Guernsey, creating fifteen paintings by Renoir, most of these feature Moulin Huet bay in Saint Martin. In 1887, Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee, as a token of his loyalty Pierre-Auguste Renoir donated several paintings to the "French Impressionist Paintings" catalog. In 1890, he married Aline Victorine Charigot, then had three sons. His wife had already served as a model for Renoir the Luncheon of the Boating Party (Le Déjeuner des canotiers 1881). After 1890, however, he returned to thinly brushed color to dissolve outlines as in earlier painting by Renoir. From this period onward he concentrated especially on monumental nudes and domestic scenes, e.g. Renoir Girls at the Piano, 1892, and Grandes Baigneuses, 1887. The latter Renoir artwork is the most typical and successful of his late and abundantly fleshed nude oil paintings. In 1907, he moved to a farm close to the Mediterranean coast. During this period, Renoir also used a moving canvas, or picture roll, to facilitate painting large art Renoir with limited joint mobility. In 1919, Pierre-Auguste Renoir visited the Louvre to see his paintings hanging with those of the old masters. He died in a village on 3 December. Two Renoir paintings have sold for more than US$70 million. Bal au moulin de la Galette sold for $78.1 million in 1990. |
